Part-Time School Bus Driver Certification Instructor
Job Goal
To support the ESC mission in the implementation of Safety Education and Training programs by ensuring school bus drivers are thoroughly trained, knowledgeable, and compliant with state certification standards, fostering a culture of safety, professionalism, and student-focused service in school transportation operations.
Qualifications
• Valid Texas Class “A” or “B” CDL with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S)endorsements (no air brake restriction)
• Minimum five years of experience in Texas public school transportation with no history of separation for failure to meet district standards
• Minimum three years of administrative or supervisory experience in Texas public school transportation
• Current Texas School Bus Driver Certification• Driving record compliant with Texas Transportation Code §521.022
• Must pass a criminal background check in accordance with state and local regulations
• Prior experience providing training or instruction to adults (preferred)Special Knowledge & Skills
• Strong instructional delivery and classroom management skills
• High level of professionalism and self-motivation
• Familiarity with Texas Administrative Code, TEA, DPS, and FMCSA transportation safety requirements
• Effective written and verbal communication• Ability to maintain accurate documentation and meet deadlines
• Capable of working independently without direct supervision
• Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
Major Responsibilities or Duties
• Conduct 20-hour School Bus Driver Certification and 8-hour Recertification classes in accordance with Region 6 and state-mandated curriculum
• Facilitate classes professionally and independently, ensuring all materials and timelines are followed
• Submit class documentation, attendance, and evaluations within three Region 6business days
• Maintain a positive and supportive learning environment
• Represent Region 6 ESC in a professional manner during all training engagements
• Ensure compliance with all Region 6 and state certification maintenance requirements
• Communicate as needed with Region 6 program staff regarding scheduling, records, and course delivery
• Other duties as assigned to support school bus driver training programs
Supervisory Responsibilities None
Equipment Used
• School bus, general training materials, instructional technology (projector, laptop, etc.)
Ability to learn and utilize any instructional or reporting software required for certification
Working Conditions•
Frequent independent travel within the Region 6 ESC service area
• Flexible work hours including mornings, evenings, and weekends
• Work in classrooms, training sites, and occasionally outdoors or on buses
• Prolonged periods of standing, speaking, and facilitating instruction
• Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds
• Exposure to varying weather conditions and vehicle fumes
• Work performed independently without on-site supervision
Job Locations Available in the Following Areas:
• Western (Bryan/College Station) Area - The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching classes in the Western area of Region 6.
• Northeastern (Trinity/Crockett) Area - The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching classes in the Northeastern area of Region 6.
• Southeastern (Conroe/Magnolia) Area The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching classes in the Southeastern area of Region 6.
